Powerful cold-season gusts caused walls to collapse upon flimsy shelters housing people uprooted by war in Gaza, killing no fewer than four people. These deaths underscores the dangerous situation that continue after more than 24 months of intense airstrikes and critical shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides Little Respite from Severe Weather

Although a ceasefire has been in effect from October, aid groups report that residents do not have the adequate housing required to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the victims, reported on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the local health authority stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to experience death in all its forms," said Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, three members of a one family — 72-year-old a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre tall wall collapsed on top of their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 additional people were injured in the event.

Their relatives on that day began clearing the rubble that had entombed their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Aid Efforts and Ongoing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene items across Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

These numbers, he said, represented incidents where enough information had been gathered to justify documentation, but the overall count is believed to be greater. He added that many hundreds of children had been injured.

"While 'bombings and shootings have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson told reporters at a press conference in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the international community now terms quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Third Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than two million people has been fighting to keep the cold weather and storms at bay while enduring shortages of humanitarian aid and a absence of sturdier transitional shelter, which is badly needed throughout the winter months. This marks the third cold season after the war involving Israel and the group began on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into Israeli territory and killed around twelve hundred people and abducted 251 more into Gaza.
