The Mayor-Elect confirms he will reside in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, did not confirm he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.
"This decision was based on the security of my family and the importance of directing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he added.
A Contentious Issue
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
