Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
