Prison Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He contested justice and the law triumphed.

Sixty days subsequent to receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “destroy” the nation's democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Jailing

The convicted instigator – who had been living under house arrest in his estate while a series of legal procedures and petitions play out – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the next few days, during mounting talk that he will be moved to a well-known high-security penitentiary.

Past Comments on Convicts

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the far-right former military man displayed scant compassion for Brazil’s inmates.

“For what reason must we offer those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to end up in prison, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Jail Destination Speculation

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has horrified backers, a group of four this week inspected the prison in an seeming bid to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, said he anticipated the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious gut problems – the outcome of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 presidential election race – meant it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is very grave. He will not be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he added, who also worried about packed cells and the quality of inmate food.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells containing four dozen inmates: “That’s practically one meter squared per detainee.

“We conversed to the inmates and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the awful cuisine,” continued the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

Lucas is not the sole person expressing views before the former president’s anticipated imprisonment.

Penning in a leading newspaper, one more backer, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the biggest wrong in its record”.

“This is an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of many Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Popular Reaction

That may be true given the significant following Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. However his predicted imprisonment has also pleased the spirits of many other people who feel he ought to be imprisoned for planning to prevent the elected leader from assuming office – and also conspiring to have him murdered.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the incumbent president's Workers’ party, commented: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to obtain respectful treatment – but respectful care while incarcerated. He can’t continue being his own prison warden for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years celebrating the harsh treatment of prisoners, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Recently has the extreme right – which has repeatedly claimed that human rights were not for criminals – chosen to inspect a penitentiary to find out what conditions are really like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, degrading treatment”.

Likely Incarceration Conditions

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his expected assigned facility seems to be a nearby jail for law enforcement and other “particular” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning presidential palace, approximately 20 kilometers away.

As per information, the cell Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – about the area of a couple of car spots – and includes a 130 square foot restroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter veranda. “He could be permitted to have a television and even a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his relatives,” information suggested.

Ideological Comments

He denounced the rumoured proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his future in the {
