Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

There are "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.

Last Thursday the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest soon to address the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The administration withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting the president had urged him to relinquish large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

However, on this week Trump embraced a truce plan backed by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against halting the current line of contact.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, suggesting that freezing the front line would merely represent a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that include the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a non-starter for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented conversations concerning the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the only topic that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday occurred before reports that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he added.
