New Year Celebrants Advised to Dress Warmly with Snow Predicted Across the UK
Weather experts are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Celebrations Continue Despite Alerts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be necessary," said the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are expected to be low, making additional clothing a necessity, as per forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday
Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on trains and buses.
Readings Forecast to Drop Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Alerts Issued
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this meant the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
The guidance for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, dressing for the cold is absolutely essential.
