Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site of where the pictures were from was based on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
