The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
