In November 2018, Steve Bannon, formerly Donald Trump's chief strategist, visited the UK preparing for a address at the prestigious Oxford Union.

These messages were published on Wednesday alongside more than 20,000 documents from the records of Epstein, the late financier convicted of sex crimes.

The disclosure by the House oversight committee contains an iMessage chat where Bannon's identity is withheld. The BBC has been able to confirm his identity by cross-referencing the timeline, events, and places mentioned.

For example, Epstein discusses chartering a jet from Scotland for the unnamed individual in the messages, and offers praise their "address at Oxford". Bannon took part in the Edinburgh conference on November 14, and gave the talk at the Oxford Union two days later.

Bannon, who is not accused of any wrongdoing, did not reply on the inquiry.

Epstein's Assurance to Bannon

Bannon served as the president's closest aides in the lead-up to the presidential election and in the early days of his first administration, but resigned from the administration in August 2017.

He has admitted he was producing a documentary about Epstein before his death and allegedly has around 15 hours of footage. In a live taping of his show earlier this year, he stated: "We plan to publish the film, the five-part series, next year - at the start of next year."

But the newly released materials indicate Bannon's connection with Epstein extended than documenting his life, with the disgraced financier occasionally appearing to serve like a personal assistant.

The released communications also show Bannon and Epstein talking about British political matters in that year.

On the same day his speech at the Oxford Union, Bannon texted Epstein: "I became involved in the Brexit thing this day with Nigel, Johnson and Mogg."

Then, in what seems like a allusion to the UK prime minister, the embattled UK prime minister at the time, he added: "The guys are attempting to move on. may soon…"

Epstein advised Bannon: "In my view remaining as long as you can uk. Ideal- so people get the dedication of your follow-up."

Soon after, Epstein asked: "Can Theresa may survive". Bannon replied: "It seems unlikely BUT the guys here have no balls" and noted "Boris ; Gove; Jacob Rees-Mogg; Davis - someone has to take charge".

May was eventually toppled in 2019 after withstanding multiple attempts of no confidence in December 2018.

A representative for the political party told media: "Farage has not been in a gathering with Steve Bannon, Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson." And there is nothing to suggest that encounter occurred.

The US House of Representatives will vote soon on whether the Department of Justice should make public all its files concerning its investigation into Epstein, who died in jail in 2019.
