Cameron Norrie achieved the most notable victory of his professional journey by rallying from a lost first set to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph represents Norrie's maiden victory over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who is now the newest English competitor in the record books to overcome a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualies here. I just sought to enjoy my game in the closing months of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the greatest win of my professional life, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and probably the most confident player in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight premier event victories, which marked the top run of performances in the young champion's young career.

Game Breakdown

Alcaraz looked to be advancing smoothly to success early on as he eased past the opening set. Nevertheless, the British contender gradually worked himself back into the game by delivering with sharper placement and engaging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, physical rallies. His relentless steadiness and reliability steadily left its mark.

For much of the contest, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he found it challenging to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The rising talent looked notably struggling hitting his forehand, which has been the best shot in the game for much of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, Norrie offered Alcaraz very few errors, keeping up his steadiness, fitness and penetration throughout while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to advance forward and attack well.

Following struggling for months due to a significant physical setback and challenges with his form, Norrie fell as far down as 91st globally this year. Following appearances in the quarter-finals at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros fourth round since then, this triumph highlights the 30-year-old's development as he seeks to make his way to the world's top twenty and beyond. The Spanish sensation, in spite of his incredible achievements, is has not yet solve how to produce his best tennis indoors.
