Arne Slot Insists He Feels Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's expected for doubts to be raised about his future following a further heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their ninth defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's poorest streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I feel secure, I'm fine, I've received plenty of backing from the top,” the coach remarked.
“It would be nice to reverse this trend and earn three points naturally but when you're in a managerial role and underperforming then it is normal that people question you.”
He continued, “I am OK with my situation. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Club Management
When asked to elaborate on his dialogues with the club's leadership, Slot revealed:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don't phone me all the time of the day to say they back me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard conversations we have I perceive the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them since this match so far so we'll see.”
Familiar Issues and Player Reaction
Slot highlighted known weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their Champions League defeat, namely poor finishing and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” Jones remarked.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don't need to wait to think about it. I’m past getting mad inside. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He added, “It's tough because I’m playing for the side I follow. I support them, and I've watched Liverpool since I was young.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Reds side enduring a period of this nature with outcomes like these.”
He concluded, “However we still have the emblem on our chest. And until that badge is removed, we'll continue to compete.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to its rightful place, show everyone again the values of this club and why it's known as the greatest side in the world.”
“However currently, things are bad and it needs to change.”
