During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
